INDEPENDENCE/LIBERATION/INSPIRATION

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Aloha,

Happy Independence Day!

When I think of true independence, I think of liberation from human limitations and suffering. When we are able to accept reality we are liberated.

Life presents us with many challenges, most are unexpected, some are exciting and some confront us with our fears and worries.

My twelve year old granddaughter is visiting for three weeks, last Friday night her Dad, my son, called to tell her, her dog was killed by a coyote. As my husband and I held her as she went through her grief and lose, I was reminded of how fragile the human condition is. I listened to her say again and again this could not have happened, her dog could not be dead. I could feel her suffering and pain as she held me and pleaded for this not to be true, her dog had not done anything wrong and should not die.

I comforted her by telling her it was a horrid thing that had happened, and death was not a punishment for doing “something wrong”. Death was a fact of life. One we must all deal with and no matter how much we loved someone we could not stop their death.

I shared with her how when my mom died when I was 10 years old, I had the same feelings she was having. I heard her say the same words I had said.

Together we lit a candle, chanted and burned incense to send her dog’s soul on its next journey. We spoke about what a sweet dog Ginger was. Intermittently she cried, that this could not be true. We assured her it was true and it was very sad.

We gave a her a stuffed dog to hold onto and cry to and a soft shawl to wrap herself in. She came to sit with me in my meditation room and took comfort from the energy there. I told her she could go there anytime she wanted to. We printed a picture of Ginger and put flowers around it and kept a candle lit by the photo.

After having ice cream for diner and watching a movie, she slept with us that night and we held her and let her be sad.

The next day was a very sad day for her. She spoke with her mom and dad often and they cried together. We held her, soothed her and allowed her to mourn. She fell asleep that night holding my hand.

She awoke the next day and said, “Grand mom I feel happy today”. Later that day, after going to the beach, she said, “Grand mom, I think I have accepted that Ginger is dead.”  I told her how glad I was because having accepted the truth, she would be sad and she would not suffer from fighting reality. She said, “I know.”

I share this with you because I learned a great deal from her. She grieved, she spoke her feelings, she prayed for her dog, she faced the truth, regardless of how painful. And than she accepted reality and went on with life. Of course, she still feels sad, however, because she is not denying reality she is liberated from suffering.

May we all accept reality and release suffering. LEARN HOW AT www.lifemasteryskills.com
